APFS is a new file system for macOS. It’s the most appropriate format for flash drives and SSDs. However, in order to write to this file system, you need to have the latest macOS. If you’re sure that you won’t connect the USB drive to a Mac computer running old version, then you can format your USB drive with APFS. How to Format a Flash Drive on Mac Before you proceed with formatting your flash drive, you should first consider which format you are going to use. Selecting the correct format is crucial as it will have an impact on its compatibility with your Mac. If I try to format it using macOS built-in Disk Utility app, it will only free the space in that partition. This is not a my SD memory card issue. And it can happen with a flash drive from any manufacturer. This is not a problem with the flash drive at all. In my case it’s all about the type of previous formatting.
